Aesop's Fables Week One

This week, in our fables theme, we learned about several well known fables with great morals attached to them. These included The Bundle of Sticks, The Grasshopper & The ants, The Hare & The Tortoise and last was The Dog & His Reflections. Within these stories we learned about cooperation, hard work, perseverance and greed. Max's favorite was The Hare & The Tortoise. He thought it was just the funniest thing ever that the tortoise beat the Hare (he calls it a mayor) in the race.

Tuesday we started our say off with circle time. This is usually how we start every day. During circle time we talked about Max's different friend and family and what he enjoys to do with each of them. We then made a chain with the names of all the people that he listed on each strip. We hung this in our classroom area. Then, with our pocket cube, we used the letters A, B, and C, and created the letters with some craft sticks. Max had a little bit of a hard time doing this one so we did not spend too much time on it.

Wednesday we were off and hopping. The Grasshopper and the ants was focus for the day. Circle time was short because Max was so excited to play Tic-Tac-Toe with his Ant and Grasshopper pieces. I saved the game for last because I knew we would  be playing it for awhile. We started with our letter coloring sheet. Max used bingo dobbers to make ant bodies and then I helped him draw on the legs. This turned out super cute! Then we used our gem counters. We took turns drawing numbers. I would put my number of counters on the ant and Max wanted to put his number of counters on the grasshopper.  This did not keep his attention very long because he just wanted to get to the game. However, once we started playing, he was no longer interested. He is still learning the concept of the game.

The Hare and The Tortoise set us jumping into Thursday. During circle time, we read the story twice because Max was so entertained by the fact that the Hare won the race. To run with the excitement of the story, we created our race map. He was very persistent on trying to put the start and finish pieces in the same spots as the example and then was to place everything else in his own spots. Since we had our colored pencils out we pulled out our journals and did the first four pages. Last was our board game. I thought he was really going to love this because he loves playing board games. We went through one game and he was done. We did, however, leave the game on our table and he played it that evening with his dad when he got home from work.

Fridays are always a hard day to get motivated. The Dog and His Reflection was a great way to start our weekend. Circle time today was fun because while I was reading the story, Max had to drop his "bone" (a block he picked out) into the water when the dog in the story dropped his bone in the water. We made big splashing noises when he dropped the block. This really got him into the rest of the lesson. Max decorated his dog max and then crawled around the dinning room with his bone in his month. We attempted to do some letter reflections with shaving cream and our cube cards but he just wanted to pretend to be a dog at this point so we cleaned up for the day. I am going to try to do letter reflections with him tomorrow morning.
