This is our first month using Mother Goose time and we could not be happier. I love how the lessons are all laid out for us and almost everything we need for the curriculum is provided. This is such an exciting experience and we cannot wait to dive right in as we open our first box called Ocean Commotion.
This week we worked with Ocean waters, Ocean Floors, and Ocean Caves. I think our favorite section was the ocean water because we were playing with water in the super warm California heat!
Every day we would start off with our circle time song, our days of the week, month and the weather. max looks forward to this part every day. He will tell us throughout the day what the date is so we know he is really enjoying what he is learning.
In lesson one, Ocean waters, we learned about the five different oceans and how salt water tastes different than the water we drink. It was too funny seeing our little guys face when he tastes the salt water. Next, we continued with the salt water and made some salt water art. This was a huge hit! It allowed him to interpret the display that was in front of him, at the same time allowing him to be creative. This activity also helped work with fine motor skills using the eye dropper. We then took a break from the water play and wrote our names on the ocean name tags. We used all three and wrote Max, Mom, and Dad. He loves to still give them out to us at dinner time. At last, we are to Max's favorite part, The Five Oceans counting game. We set out five bowls filled with water and set out our five ocean names and then we were off. We would roll our pocket cube and put the correct number of shells in the ocean of his choice. I did make it interesting by telling him which ocean to put them in towards the end by saying, " Put them in the Indian ocean, Indian starts with an I". This allowed him to start to really look at the names of them. When all the shells were gone we were able to look and the different bowls and see which ocean had the most shells and which had the least.
In lesson two, we worked on the ocean floor. This one was a lot of fun so our older son decided to join in on the fun. We crumpled up sheets of paper and used a sheet as our parachute to show how the waves move the object on the bottom of the ocean floor. This was actually something that our 12-year-old didn't know, so it was nice having him involved. We made oysters out of paper plates with pearls and played hid and seek with them. The boys would take turns hiding the oysters around the house while the other one would go find them. While they were playing hide and seek, I was able to set up our last two activities. We used sand on a cookie sheet for our numbered shells activity and taped an O on the floor to roll our paper balls from the parachute activity into the middle of the letter. We also added in the stem sensory station and mixed shaving foam with sand and made some sand mountains and hid the shells in them.
In lesson three we focused on ocean caves. This one was entertaining. We learned about which animals lived in the ocean and which lived in other parts of our world. We have a rug in our playroom that has a neighborhood on it with roads, a forest, a house, a school, a farm and a store. We were able to use that for the animals that did not live in the ocean. I had him place the animals in the appropriate locations. It was surprising to see that he actually knew where each of the animals lived. We were able to also talk about what kind of houses they have and what they sleep in or on. Next Max wrote his name on the front of his journal and drew jellyfish. That was great for him to use him imagination and create his cover. While Max was hard at work on his journal, I set up his own ocean cave (which of course big brother was a part of). The cave turned out to be the size of our dining room. The boys had a great time. We had the counting strips on the table outside of the cave and they were communicating how many more they needed for each card. I think they loved having it dark and using the flashlights the most.
This was the perfect start to our first week with Mother Goose Time. Next week we will be working with Ocean Plants and Coral Reef!!
